I wrote this article anonymously due to the stigma around eating disorders in the 90s. Whilst I now have more knowledge and understanding of the early personal and transgenerational events and circumstances that underpinned this level of internal conflict, once external identity validation was lost, the ideas around externalisation of identity and coping strategies strongly influence my current therapeutic practice.
